Dagger Dolls Put a Cap on Season 11 with a 209-191 Victory over Old Capitol City

By Drewraffe

As a result of becoming the Season 11 Minnesota RollerGirls champions, The Dagger Dolls were awarded the opportunity to take on the Old Capitol City Roller Derby All-Stars of Iowa City, IA in the second half of the annual doubleheader with the Minnesota Swarm in the Xcel Energy Center.

Old Capitol City were first to score in period one, but before the first jam was complete, Shiver Me Kimbers had scored 10 points. The Dagger Dolls were able to hold the lead for the majority of the half, despite some penalty troubles. Dolls blockers including Hanna Belle Lector and Shotgun Millie laid down some serious defensive blocking, while jammers including Jacked Pipes and Winona Collider fought to build on Minnesota’s lead a few points at a time. Following the Dolls holding Old Cap nearly scoreless for 10 minutes, Old Capitol City started their way to a comeback, by scoring 23 points in one jam. With only a few minutes left in the half, The Dolls were able to slow Old Cap’s progress, but Old Capitol City were able to tie the score and then take the lead in the few remaining minutes, ending the half with the score at 99 to 75 in favor of Old Cap.

The second half started with The Dagger Dolls’ jammer in the penalty box, but Lydia Punch exited the box to start the Dolls on a slow climb to close the gap. The Dolls held Old Capitol City to few to no points in each following jam and were able to regain the lead within the first 10 minutes of the period. Following a string of jammer penalties for both teams, The Dolls called a time out to regroup. The team circled co-captain Killsey McMurder as she shouted what I imagine to be really nice things while looking really mean, which was then followed by a skater dance party to “The Hustle”. Tara Skatesov took whatever Killsey had to say to heart, knocking the Old Cap jammer out of bounds 3 times in a row, allowing Killsey to score 9 points.

At the end of the second period there was a battle for the top with both teams scoring, resulting in a tie score with 2 seconds left on the period clock, Old Cap called a timeout. In what would normally be the final jam of the game, Old Capitol City was able to get lead jammer, but immediately called it off, keeping the score tied with no time left on the period clock, resulting in overtime with the score sitting at 184 to 184.

In an overtime jam there is no lead jammer called, meaning neither jammer can call off the jam, and it will last the entire 2 minutes. Scoring begins on the first pass through the pack. In what looked like a fight to the death, Shiver Me Kimbers fought her way through on multiple passes, while the Dolls defensive wall held Old Cap to one pass, and a final score of 209 to 191, Dagger Dolls.

The Dagger Dolls once again proved that they earned the Season 11 Championship with solid offensive and defensive strategy, a strong jammer pool, and the willingness to “Do the Hustle” when it’s time.
