No Future for Polyester; Punks Defeat Disco, 70-40

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

As a precursor to the highly-anticipated Madison v Minnesota bout, MNRG brought us an exhibition bout; an iteration of that eternal struggle between might and right, pretty and powerful, DIY and DIOTDF (Do It On The Dance Floor)... punk versus disco.

Dudezilla took a quick lead for the Punks, grabbing the lead while her teammate Optimiss Crime momentarily plastered Disco jammer Sparkle Ninja to the outside. Dudezilla lapped and passed the pack for four, but Ninja took two before the jam was called. Disco sent Joscelyn D'Jewels next to jam against Mary Tyler Roar. MTR stepped through Joscelyn on the back turn, causing enough interference to get the lead. JJ got further stymied by Punk blocker Norah Torious, and MTR earned nine points for the Punks. Disco jammer CleoSPLATra came right back with three points, with Mitzi Massacre scoring four more for the Pretty People the following jam, as Disco blockers Rumblebee and Rizzo collected Punk jammers and deposited them behind the pack. With twelve minutes to go, the score was 13-9, Punks ahead.

The Punks rolled the dice and put up rookie Mae Gusta against Calamity Crush. Neither took the lead, although Mae kept her head to stay out of the penalty box. Crush, however, accumulated enough minors to be sent to the box after a couple points scored at the very end of the jam. With Calamity in the box, the Punks sent Dudezilla to take advantage of the power jam (a jammer skating unopposed is much more likely to score). Dudezilla scored eight points before Crush re-entered the pack from the penalty box, took the lead, and quickly called off the jam. Sparkle Ninja returned for the Discoers to take another lead, but got sent out when Trinity Knox knocked her through the inside corner and back out onto the track in the midst of the pack (a major violation, as Sparkle had passed two opposing players on her way through the corner.) L'exi-cuter, jamming for the Punks, took full advantage of the power jam and grabbed five points.

Mary Tyler Roar came out next, picking up the lead and nine points on the advantage before Sparkle Ninja could return from Grams' Penalty Kitchen. L'exi-cuter and Sweet Justice extended that lead as Disco jammer Abbie Mischief fell into penalty trouble, and at the half, the score favored the Punks 41-19. The combined force of Mary Tyler Roar and Dudezilla as well as a strong defensive force kept the Punks ahead. While Disco had some gutsy defensive play by Rumblebee, Rizzo, and Inspectress Gadget, they kept running afoul of penalties that sent too many of their players to the box.

Following halftime, Abbie and Sweet Justice played the first jam and fought through a revived pack. Abbie picked up a stray point. Continuing her use of rookies from the first period, Punk bench coach Scootaloo sent Psycho Novia to the jammer line against Calamity Crush. Novia took a line that sped past an out-of-position Disco pack and grabbed her very first lead jam, scoring three points before Fixie Chic sent her out, forcing a calling off of the jam. Rookie jammers Joscelyn D'Jewels and L'exi-cuter showed in the following jam some of the spark from Pirates versus Zombies in October. L'exi got caught up early on by Icepack, Mitzi Massacre and the Disco pack, giving Joscelyn an opportunity to score seven points for Disco before Dudezilla stopped her cold. Meanwhile, L'exi put several points of her own up for the Punks.

Mary Tyler Roar returned for the Punks and promptly went out on a track-cutting major. The Punk pack rose to the challenge to hold Disco jammer CleoSPLATra back; pivot Optimiss Crime took the opportunity to roll out Cleo into the crowd, preventing the veteran from scoring. Hell N Ready broke a trail in the next jam for Disco's Mitzi Massacre, but Mitzi was sent to the box, giving both Dudezilla and Punk rookie Shiv and Let Die opportunities to steal points. Despite Fixie Chic and Rumblebee's best efforts (including a glorious corner shove of Dudezilla by 'Bee), the Punks had taken a definitive lead with less than four minutes to go, 65-34.

The next jam sent both jammers - Abbie for Disco, Mary Tyler Roar for Punk... to the penalty box for a jammerless result. Now, following a jammerless jam, the packs stay the same but rotate the jammer position to a player not in the box for the next jam. Got that? Good. In this case, Sinaminn (Disco) and Velvet Hammer (Punk) became jammers and blasted through the depleted packs. Velvet grabbed the lead and quickly ended the jam. This left time for two more jams, each deftly controlled by Punk jammers Psycho Novia and Dudezilla. Final score - 70-40.

The Punk team performed remarkably in this exhibition bout. With surprise performances from Psycho Novia and Shiv and Let Die as well as the usual heavy lifting from MNRG mainstays Dudezilla and Mary Tyler Roar, the jammers in black and safety pins controlled the match. The Punk defense, however, kept the Disco score very low and made the difference against Sparkle Ninja, Mitzi, Joscelyn, and CleoSPLATra. Disco's defense did put up a good fight; Killahertz and Fixie Chic were containing Punk jammers long enough for the rest of their pack to catch up and punish those not quick enough to escape... but the Punks accelerated out of danger all too quickly.

December's bout comes in three weeks; we'll see how the rookies introduced in these warm-up matches will fare once they don Rockit red, Dagger Doll pink, Bombshell orange, and Garda Belt green. The home season is in sight, Minnesota. Get ready.

MNRG go 2-0 in Philly

The Minnesota RollerGirls returned to competitive play this past weekend at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza in Philadelphia, PA. The ECDX has been a major gathering point for sanctioned bouts between leagues of all skill levels over the past few years.

The Extravaganza is a time for old friends and derby wives to reconnect and close a few bars together, but the ECDX’s position in the derby calendar also makes it one of the very last stops before ranking occurs for WFTDA’s Q3 rankings. The 3rd quarter ranking (decided upon by other WFTDA skaters) decides the seeding of leagues for the four regional tournaments, so the outcomes of the ECDX bouts have a great influence on who’s in and who’s out. It’s the last chance for teams to show off before voting, in no small part due due to...

Atomic Bombshells go hot for the championship, 78-58

The Atomic Bombshells defeated the Rockits in a thriller of a game - a Rockitbuster, if you will - on April 3rd at the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium. The Bombshells played their strategy to their utmost, summoning every resource they could muster to send their jammer to the front. And though it seemed as if penalties in the pack might end their hopes to hold the Golden Skate high, the Bombshells emerged triumphant.

Harmony Killerbruise took the first lead for the Rockits, but Bombshell jammer Venus Thightrap forced her to call the jam by bypassing on the sprint to the back of the pack. L'exi-cuter, recharged from last month's break, found a way around Rockit blocker Scarmen Hellectra up front (who went to the box off an illegal hit), took the lead, and charged ahead for the f...

Gardas outplay Dolls for 3rd, 74-45

The MNRG Garda Belts took the game to the Dagger Dolls on April 3rd in a third-place bout that was rarely in doubt. The Gardas has long had a strong presence in the pack, but the surprise in this bout was the coming-out party for Cassie Rolle and the resurgence of Angelfire as a jammer after years of injury and rehab. With both sides of the Garda machine going, the women in green took the lead more than 75% of the time. The Dolls had their surges of excellence, but the Gardas took the day.

The Garda Belts stole an early march from the opening whistle. Garda co-captain Suzie Smashbox took the first lead after being denied by Doll blocker Shiver Me Kimbers. She recovered and returned to slash past Kimbers and Buffy the Vampire Skater. Garda blocker Tiki Torture delayed Killamon J...

Bombs away! (recaplet)

Bombshells take the Title, 78-58

The Atomic Bombshells skated their way to MNRG history on April 3rd, defeating the two-time defending champion Rockits and finishing the home season undefeated. The Bombshells started well, scoring eleven unanswered points in the first four jams. At the halfway mark, the Rockits had at last started to get their line-grinding defense to start sending opponents to the box and getting points on the board, but the Bombshells still outscored them. 19-7 Bombshells with ten to go.

The scoring tide came in for the Rockits the very next jam as Vuedoo Prodigy busted free for the Rockits and scored fourteen points on a power jam (and changing the lead) as Venus Thightrap languished in the box. Harmony Killerbruise, then Scarmen Hellectra followed up for anoth...

Gardas finish third (recaplet)

In this 3rd-place bout, the Gardas took the lead and never looked back. Garda Belt jammers took the first seven jams, led by captain and jammer Suzie Smashbox (who went a mind-blowing 12-for-13 lead jams in the bout). At the ten-minute mark, the Gardas were up 24-3.

Sparkle Ninja took the first of three lead jams for the Dagger Dolls in the half, but it was Psycho Novia and Buffy the Vampire Skater (scoring fourteen unanswered points over two jams) that kept the Dollys from falling further behind. Otherwise, the Garda defense dominated the track, led by no less than six veteran Gardas stopping Dollys from advancing on every turn. 43-21 Gardas at the half.

The Gardas widened the gap at the start of the second half, scoring eleven unanswered points in its first eight minutes, though...

Preview for Hometeam Championship 2010 (part 2)

We explored the ins and outs of the April 3rd MNRG season championship in the previous article. Now our attention turns to the Garda Belts and the Dagger Dolls, who will fight it out for third place.

In 2009, I wrote that the Dagger Dolls were in the midst of a pregnant pause. That pause has now lengthened into a multi-year slump that has puzzled players, refs, and fans alike. Candi Pain and Sweet Justice, co-captains of the Dollys, selected fast, eager jammers to fill the holes left by a swath of last year's retirees and blockers that have already proven themselves to cause some panic in the pack. The Dolls have had fresh injections of strong, fast talent each year...but they have not yet been able to focus that energy into the team at large on bout nights. They have lost their ...
