League History
How did the MNRG get started?
The story is relatively simple. Three sisters from Minnesota learned about the Austin, TX resurgence of roller derby through reading an article in Jane Magazine in 2003. The three went down to the Lone Star State and saw the beginnings of the new derby. They brought the fire of flat-track to Minnesota and started recruiting a cadre of bad-ass women from all over the Twin Cities. We started selling out the little Coon Rapids roller rink we began at and soon moved to the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium.
What’s this Golden Skate thing?
The Golden Skate is the MNRG’s home team championship trophy. The Golden Skate is generally watched by a crack team of security professionals on championship bout night, then jealously guarded (and used to air out kneepads) by the winning team. Few have held this relic of Minnesota derby history.
