Bout Recap: Atomic Bombshells nuke Rockits, 135-63
Thursday, January 24, 2013
The Atomic Bombshells are ruling the track.
This game had been hotly anticipated by Rockits and Bombshell fans alike as a likely preview of the season championship. The Rockits and ABS had each won a game and showed strength as a team on their skates. However, the January 19th broke early in the ABS’ favor.
The Bombshells burned through the Rockit defense in the first half, scoring twelve lead jams to the Rockits’ three. The Rockits found their fight in the second half, yet a strong, relentless set of Bombshell jammers found ways to outscore the Rockits…and the veteran Bombshell blockers played a superior defensive game.
Atomic Bombshells v Rockits
The Bombshells and Rockits put L’exi-Cuter and Harmony Killerbruise on the jammer line for the opening jam. L’exi quickly swam through the pack, took lead, and scored a grand slam before Harmony could escape the ABS’ pack of Diamond Rough, Hurtrude (Trudy) Stein, and Juke Boxx. L’exi stayed on the track for the next jam, gave her jammer cover to Juke, and worked on Commander Nix as Juke Boxx scored four. ABS newcomer Crowella de Vil, then Lizzy the Axe, each stepped forward to score four in the next two jams. 17-0 after four minutes, Bombshells up.
Rockit co-captain Commander Nix scored her team’s first lead jam of the night as Freeze Baby got called on a track cut. With the recent change of rules, every penalty called means a minute in the penalty box. Nix went on a power jam and scored an easy fifteen points against a short ABS pack as Hurtrude Stein and Messi Jigler joined Freeze in the penalty box.
L’exi-Cuter reclaimed control for her Bombshells, scoring three points and calling it as Rockits Scarmen Hellectra and Buzz Tightrear honed in on the ABS jammer. The Rockits’ concern against the Bombshells’ heavy hitters showed in their heavy rotation of these two in the pack; both Buzz and Scar played two out of three jams throughout the bout (until Scar’s fifth foul in the 27th minute). However, the ABS continued their assault on the Rockits as Crowella, Juke, and Freeze each took the lead and scored over the next three jams. At the 11th minute, the Rockits had enough and took a timeout. 39-15, Bombshells up.
Against a pack short on Bombshells, Harmony scored her first lead jam and four points as Konceal’n Kari delayed L’exi-Cuter. After that scoring run, the ABS’ Crowella scored four in kind. Formerly a member of Baltimore’s elite Charm City Rollergirls, the recent transfer moved through the pack like a deer through the forest. Lizzy the Axe took another two, walking the tightrope of the outside lane and accelerating around the Rockits inside. Freeze grabbed another ABS lead early in the next jam, but Killahertz and Scarmen reabsorbed her into the pack as Harmony spun out of it. Freeze called the jam. 45-19 with six left in the half.
Commander Nix grabbed the next lead, but her pack was so outpaced by the ABS that the Rockit jammer called it off before opposing jammer L’exi-Cuter could steal points. With four minutes to go, Crowella de Vil claimed the lead for the ABS as Dreidel Robber, monstered by Venus Thightrap, Flora Flipabitch, and Trudy, got called for a track cut. Crowella detonated a nineteen-point power jam with enough time on the penalty clock to give L’exi the opportunity to score ten more. However, L’exi came in hot on her third scoring pass and nailed Scarmen from behind. Power jam to the returning Dreidel as time wound down; Dreidel Robber scored five.
HALFTIME: Atomic Bombshells 79 - 24 Rockits
With L’exi-Cuter in the box, Commander Nix took the opportunity to grab a lead. However, Nix’s remaining power jam was kept short by an ABS pack filled with All-Stars (Juke, Venus, Trudy, Diamond). Harmony chipped another four points off the Bombshell lead the following jam.
With fifty points now between the two teams, every jam won by the Bombshells wore time away from the clock. L’exi and Crowella took the next two lead jams for three points. The Rockits won back four as Harmony Killerbruise took the lead and scored - Harmony continues to be a dependable fountain of points this year for the Rockits. However, her pack’s smaller size couldn’t stop Lizzy the Axe from charging through for the ABS, so Harmony called off the jam. 85-36 at the 26th minute, Bombshells ahead.
The Bombshells took the next four jams. Crowella, L’exi, Freeze, and Juke each scored, with Juke Boxx putting up eight points as she slipped through a leaky outside lane. Juke’s score put the ABS into the triple digits (101-38) and well into the lead.
With time running out (nine minutes to go), Rockit jammers staged a coup and pulled the next five lead jams - including two power jams. However, the ABS would not be stopped. Rockit jammers would bust out of the pack, then get recycled. L’exi-Cuter scored points on lagging Rockit blockers before the jam could be called. And all throughout, the ABS blockers kept pressure on the opposing team, separating the Rockit pack from each other and not allowing them to form their walls.
The Rockits outscored the ABS over those five jams 21-2, but L’exi’s final jam of the night at the 38th minute almost erased that run. Scoring eighteen unanswered points as Commander Nix was held in the pack with only two Rockit blockers backing her up, L’exi tied up the win. Crowella brought it home in the final seconds and delivered the first defeat of the season to the Rockits.
