Bout Recap: Whitewash: Bombshells go critical, take third-place - ABS 126 - Gardas 44
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
The Atomic Bombshells snapped their six-game losing streak by soundly defeating the mighty Garda Belts 126-44 for the Minnesota RollerGirls’ 3rd-place spot. The Gardas took the lead early in the bout, but the Bombshells would not be denied. Mixing relentless jamming with dogged blocker determination, the Atomic Bombshells took the lead jam over two-thirds of the time and held the Gardas to only ten points in the second half.
Third-place bout: Garda Belts (1-2) v Atomic Bombshells (0-3)
All-star jammers Moto Fluzzi (for the Gardas) and L’exi-Cuter (of the ABS) lined up for the initial jam of the bout. L’exi took the outside line to attempt a lightning-fast lead, but Garda blocker Citizen Pain was ready for her and dumped the Bombshell to the inside. L’exi recovered, got the lead, scored four, and called it as Citizen came roaring in on her again.
The Gardas responded with MEDUSA; the juking Garda jammer quickly scored the lead, but got held by Venus Thightrap for half a lap on her first scoring pass. MEDUSA, like L’exi, found her way past the opposing blocker…and again like L’exi, called it on the following lap as Venus angled in. Gardas ahead, 8-4.
L’exi took the game to a tie in the following jam as she veered through traffic. Tara Bichapart sent the Gardas ahead by another four as her teammates iced ABS rookie Fannie Tanner with a defensive fan into the outside lane. MEDUSA and Moto Fluzzi grabbed five more over the next three jams, while Freeze blazed past the Gardas for four. Gardas up 17-12 after the tenth minute.
The ABS’ Fannie Tanner went to the jammer line against MEDUSA. Unlike her fellow players, Fannie chose the inside lane, guarded by teammate Venus Thightrap. MEDUSA followed Fannie through that path, but Venus dropped a shoulder into MEDUSA, sending her flying to the inside. Fannie scored nine points as MEDUSA was held back by a fierce ABS two-wall.
Messi Jigler followed up with a twelve-point jam against the Gardas’ Shiva Shank’n. Shiva started the jam well by sending Messi inside as they both entered the pack, but Shiva accelerated too fast through coverage and got sent to the box on a back block. Messi scored twelve, then got nailed with her own back-blocking penalty. Shiva responded with four of her own as the jam ended. With Messi still serving time in the box, the Gardas took a knee before the next jam started. This gave their own jammer Tara Bichapart an instant start off of the line, which Tara used to score nine unanswered points. That brought the Gardas within three, 33-30 Atomic Bombshells up at the 16th minute.
In the final minutes of the half, the ABS expanded that gap slightly. L’exi pulled five points out in a duel against veteran Garda Belt Rumblebee despite being held by Betty LaRude. Freeze Baby scored another four for the Bombshells as her teammates Flora Flipabitch, Madame d’Stompadour and Diamond Rough waterfalled Cassie Rolle to distraction. The Gardas controlled the final two jams with impressive blocking by Tara Bichapart, Citizen Pain, and Betty LaRude, but their jammers could only score three points. At the half, the Bombshells held a slender lead of eight. Bombshells 42-34 Gardas.
L’exi-Cuter took the initial lead of the second half, but opposing jammer MEDUSA slammed her out of bounds s they left the pack – no score for that jam. That hit was the high point for the Gardas over the next ten minutes as the Atomic Bombshells captured lead jam after lead jam.
The Bombshells strung together a blocking clinic, creating space for their own scorers while using nimble two-walls at the front to contain Garda Belt jammers. Diamond Rough broke open packs for a L’exi triple slam, Madame d’Stompadour baited Garda blockers out of position, and EmaLeethal and Venus held back MEDUSA’s rapid pace. Over those ten minutes, the ABS scored eight straight leads, doubled up their score, and allowed only three points to the Gardas. Bombshells up 85-37.
Moto Fluzzi broke that streak in the 31st minute by busting past through a pack thick with ABS blockers and taking three points as fellow Garda Belt Citizen Pain contained Messi Jigler. MEDUSA caught the Bombshells looking in the following jam, passed through the pack, and came around for the scoring run. Shiva Shank’n noticed her trajectory and blindsided Bombshell blockers to clear the road for her jammer; ‘DUSA scored four more.
From that point on, it was all Bombshells. L’exi, Fannie, and Messi Jigler scored forty-one more points as they took advantage of a Garda pack that could not stay out of the penalty box. L’exi scored twenty-five of those on a single jam by stringing out the opposing blockers and facing them one by one. Despite heroics from many of the Garda blockers, this was the Bombshells’ night.
FINAL: Atomic Bombshells 126 - Garda Belts 44. The Bombshells win their last bout of the season; the Gardas take fourth.
