: Bout recaplet: Rockits retake the Championship, Gardas take third

What a night of roller derby. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you your Season Seven Minnesota RollerGirl intraleague champions…the Rockits! The women in red defeated the Dagger Dolls in a taut match for the Golden Skate, 76-61. The Garda Belts also took their year’s first victory lap when it counted most, beating the Atomic Bombshells by two points. It came down to the final jam, but the Gardas found their speed and space on the track and took third place for the hometeam season.
After being held scoreless for over thirteen minutes in the first half, the Rockits scored twice to draw them even with the Dagger Dolls at the half, 32-32. The Rockits and Dolls traded leads in the opening moments of the second half, but penalty trouble cost the Dagger Dolls dearly as the clock wound down. Rockit rookie jamming phenon Commander Nix scored fifty points, while Rockits young and veteran - from Salvador Brawlie and Cookies and Scream to Trixie Whipsum and Honeydew Felon - defended the pack from the Dolls’ advance. The Rockits took the win and ownership of the beloved Golden Skate trophy for an unprecedented fourth time, 76-61.
The Atomic Bombshells took early control of the night’s other game as they established control of the jam clock with four straight lead jams and opened up a thirteen-point lead. Garda rookie Sintripetal Force pulled them back with a nine-point power jam - at the half, the Gardas were behind by only six, 36-30. The Gardas then ran the Bombshells ragged, holding them scoreless for seven minutes while they inched forward into the lead. The Gardas held back the orange onslaught despite a last-ditch run by Bombshell vet Lizzy the Axe and won, 76-74.

The Minnesota RollerGirls took to the track in a familiar bout on March 31st as the league’s veterans (playing as the “Mayo Clinicians”) attempted to go 2-0 against those newest to roller derby (the “State Fair Foodies”). After falling behind in the first half, the Foodies outscored the veterans 85 to 12 in the second to win the match 116-80.
