Bout Preview: Countdown to Midsummer Melee - The Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars

Monday, June 11, 2012

Minnesota has gone 3-1 on the road in the three months since our last home bout against Milwaukee’s Brewcity Bruisers. We’ve defeated every team we’ve played from the North Central (Naptown, Detroit, and Cincinnati) since. Our only loss has been a narrow one against Charm City two weeks ago at the Midwest Brewhaha derby exhibition.

Having now defeated five teams in the WFTDA’s North Central region in 2012, we now face the only team in the NC that has defeated us five times; Windy City.

Eight months after being narrowly defeated by the Windy City Rollers at the 2011 North Central Regional championship in Indianapolis, the MNRG All-Stars are ready to take on the unbeaten beast of the North once again – this time on home turf. In front of thousands of screaming fans.

This is the big one.

We asked the All-Star’s coach Dantigravity to comment on the bout, the return of Killaman Jaro after injury, and the current training regimen.

Coach Dan

mnrollergirls.com: Killaman Jaro did not play against WCR at the 2011 Regionals, but there’s word that she’ll be healed up from her winter injury in time for the 16th. What does her return give the team?

Coach Dan: I think you will once again see the unstoppable force that you used to see blazing around the track. Back and better than ever.

mnrollergirls.com: Dan - players have attributed much of Minnesota’s wins over the years to your training regimen. How has All-Star training changed since when you started in June of ‘09?

Coach Dan: Well - for starters we do daily synchronized wall sits. Every morning at 6:43 a.m. we all wall sit. We have all given up on the use of chairs too. There is a wealth of research about how sitting all day will slowly kill you. We also participate in rugged, burly Minnesotan activities. We’ve been swimming the Mississippi River, chopping lumber, log rolling, wrassling bears, muskies, loons, timberwolves, etc.

We also watch a lot of footage. We’ve studied the Vikings extensively, and have built our training program in precise opposition to theirs.

mnrollergirls.com: One constant in the All-Star team since 2009 has been taking on rookies and putting them in the big games. Last year, Hurtrude Stein and Commander Nix tore it up at the tournaments. Who’s new that we should be watching for this year?

Coach Dan: We’ve got this new skater coming in, her name is Judie. Crazy good. She’s a killer with rad footwork and agility. Not only can she skate circles around anyone but she can crush skaters with big hits. Just phenomenal!

mnrollergirls.com: We’ve gotten used to the fact that Minnesota blockers line up on the back line at the start of nearly every jam; it’s clear that the tactic works, and it seems that it puts other teams immediately on the defensive. Why does this way of starting each jam fit the MNRG All-Stars style of play more than those other leagues?

Coach Dan: We have a great sense of teaminess here at MNRG. We are very close and don’t like to be too far apart from one another. We line up on the jammer line so our blockers can be closer to our jammers. We don’t want our jammer to get lonely back there.

mnrollergirls.com: In addition to the All-Stars taking on Windy, another group of MNRG All-Stars will be playing our Minneapolis sister league’s B-team - the North Star Rollergirls Northern Lights. This is the first time in almost five years that the MNRG has put on an All-Star double header event. What’s gone into the planning for this bout?

Coach Dan: As with every bout that MNRG puts on at The Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium there is a ton of behind the scenes work being done by countless people. It is our first ever summer game so the action will be hot but our events are all run off wind power so it should still be pretty cool.

mnrollergirls.com: Is there anything about this bout that you’d like the fans who’ll be there on the 16th to know?

Coach Dan: Be ready for two very exciting and competitive games in this double header. MNRG’s Team B is taking on NSRG’s Northern Lights before the MNRG All Stars take on Windy City.

Watch for a rundown of these two bouts later this week as we prepare for Saturday’s doubleheader.
