Bout Preview: Countdown to Midsummer Melee - The Windy City Rollers All-Stars
Sunday, June 10, 2012
The Minnesota RollerGirls return this Saturday to the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium for an incredible All-Star doubleheader. The big bout of the evening puts the Windy City Roller All-Stars – ranked #1 in the WFTDA North Central region – against #2 Minnesota’s own best fourteen. .
For the MNRG, there is no bigger rival right now than the women of the Windy City. We have played this team five times over the last five years and have not yet taken a win. In fact, no team in the Midwest has ever won a full 60-minute bout against Windy City. Last year, we played two of those five games and came achingly close to defeating them both times. However, Windy always had an answer in the second half and adapted their strategy to take the win. .
We briefly spoke to Windy City’s captain Jackie Daniels last week and asked about her team, her memories of the last time she played against the MNRG at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium, and even about that streak – The Streak – of 24 straight wins.
Interview with Jackie Daniels
mnrollergirls.com: Zoe Trocious, Bork Bork Bork , and Sunshine all burst out into the spotlight at last year’s Regionals. Who should our fans be watching this year that we haven’t seen before?
Jackie Daniels: KonichiWOW is a transfer from Buffalo, whose natural ability, eagerness and comfort in any position are quickly making her a WCR standout.
We’ve added Tamikaze, Unicoroner, and Mo Vengeance to the team, who were all awesome stand outs on Second Wind [WCR’s B-team] last season in both positions on the track. With the majority of our new mates being multipositional players, it further broadens our ability to adapt as a team. We’re also seeing Sassy Squash this season, who’s a solid beacon in the pack. Also, very exciting - returning this season, as a blocker is Ruth Enasia.
mnrollergirls.com: We see that Kola Loka is back in jammer rotation for the WCR All-Stars. You last played Kola heavily as a jammer in 2010; how does her return change your tactics?
Jackie Daniels: Kola is on her third run with the All Stars, she was the team early on, through WCR’s 2nd place finish at Portland’s Nationals in 2008. She took 2009 off for some knee work and a beautiful baby boy. She returned to home team play in early 2010 and back on the All Stars for just the tournament season that year. She took 2011 off the All Stars, and is back this year.
Kola has been a top jammer from WCR since she hit the track - also a speed skater and fierce athlete in all she does - we couldn’t be happier to have Kola as a teammate on the All Stars. WCR has a great defense and great jammer rotation. Adding someone of Kola’s talent only makes the team that much stronger.
mnrollergirls.com: Should you win, this bout would represent your 25th straight win against North Central teams. What does The Streak mean to you at this point?
Jackie Daniels: Paranoia to lose!
mnrollergirls.com: Jackie, when you last played in Saint Paul on the Roy track in 2009 as part of the WFTDA Brawl of America tournament, you actually played for Grand Raggidy from Michigan. What were your thoughts about seeing Windy play for the North Central championship against Madison that year? Did you have an inkling that you wanted to play for Windy at that point?
Jackie Daniels: I actually wasn’t at the Roy much in 2009, I was the maid of honor in my sister’s wedding that Saturday night. I flew in with my still-in updo early Sunday morning, put my helmet on over it and got fired up to play against MNRG [in the 9th-place bout]. Grand Raggidy’s first 2 games that weekend were the first and only I missed with the team in my 5 seasons there.
I was a huge WCR fan since nearly day 1. I was at their second game at Congress, a volunteer for a couple seasons at Cicero, and attended most games over the years. During my game at the Roy, I busted a truck mid jam and WCR skaters came to the rescue. They ran to have my skate fixed and helped me find a loaner. I had no idea at that time I would play for WCR, yet I think it was always meant to be - there was always a connection and many special moments shared with WCR members.
Stay tuned later this week for an interview with the MNRG’s coach Dantigravity. Also watch for a preview of the two bouts: WCR v MNRG as well as the MNRG All-Stars Team B against Minneapolis’ own North Star Rollergirls Northern Lights.
