Bout Preview: Seeing Double: MNRG All-Stars v Madison’s Derbyland Dolls
Thursday, January 27, 2011
The Minnesota RollerGirls play host to the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, WI this coming Saturday. This time, the teams will not be playing on the MNRG’s home track. Instead, Madison is packing up their own sport court, bringing it up Interstate 94 and unloading it 100 yards away from Minnesota’s beloved Roy Wilkins Auditorium. On Saturday, the MNRG All-Stars will play the MRD’s Dairyland Dolls at the Xcel Energy Center as part of a double-header with the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team.
What’s more, Madison and the MNRG will attempt to break the attendance record set by Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls. The ‘X’ can hold over eleven thousand fans on lacrosse nights, and the MNRG just put on a sellout show of 4500; they’ll be shooting to break the Rat’s record of 6,015 scanned tickets with the combined force of the upper Midwest derby community and supporters as well as introducing lacrosse fans to two of the Midwest’s best road teams.
Minnesota/Madison is the single-most storied rivalry of the North Central region. They’ve played in the rain, at Bumbershoot, twice at the Roy, and at two separate regional tournaments. Of all of those bouts, Minnesota has only won the last two. Their most recent battle was the celebrated second semi-final of the 2010 NC Regionals; Madison pulled ahead early with a 50-15 lead on a set of power jams. the MNRG All-Stars then swept ahead with a 74-17 scoring run over the middle thirty minutes of the bout. Minnesota ended up with the win (119-107) and entered into the regional championship against Windy City. At the WFTDA championships, neither team advanced out of the opening round - Charm City sent Minnesota packing 249-119, while the Liberty Belles of Philly knocked the Dairyland Dolls out 213-53.
The stakes for this bout are high. The MNRG and the MRD are ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively in the NC region. Above them looms the Windy City; Chicago’s first WFTDA league has not yet been beaten by a North Central team. In the #4 and #5 spots sit Detroit and Cincinnati, both of whom look to gain in the rankings if one of these teams should show significant weakness\. This is one of the opening salvos of a long NC road team season. A lot of eyes will be watching.
Fans of the two teams will also note some familiar names in the rosters…as well as several not seen for over a year. For the Dolls, the exceptional Jewels of Denile has retired from active play and will bench coach with Mustang. Meanwhile, triple-threat Dutch Oven has returned from a nine-month injury and will likely be attempting to kill MNRG All-Stars as usual. Minnesota likewise has had a couple of retirements from the All-Star team; rear blocker Honeydew Felon and jammer Suzie Smashbox are stepping back. This has allowed NSRG transfer MEDUSA to join the Minnesota RollerGirls for the first time in road-team play…as well as a late arrival from Oly. Harmony Killerbruise rejoined the MNRG shortly after Championals and will put don the Minnesota All-Star jammer star for the first time since 2009.
If you live near the state of Minnesota, tickets are still available for this unique lacrosse/WFTDA-sanctioned bout double-header and can be bought through Ticketmaster or at the Xcel Energy Center box office. Doors for the first game of the night (the Minnesota Swarm vs the Washington Stealth) open at 6:30pm CST. For those separated from the action by a mountain range or ocean, DNN will be boutcasting from shortly before the bout begins (likely 9:45 CST). The video feed, as always for MNRG-hosted bouts, can be seen at tv.mnrollergirls.com.
