Bout Recap: Gardas and Dolls score first blood on season’s opening night

Wednesday, October 19, 2011

The Minnesota RollerGirls’ season eight began with a surprising jolt as the defending champion Rockits fell to the steady onslaught of Dagger Doll defense (Dagger Dolls 86-49 Rockits). Meanwhile, the Garda Belts took a sudden, insurmountable lead late in the second period against the Atomic Bombshells to take their first victory of the season (Gardas 80 – 59 Bombshells).

Atomic Bombshells v Garda Belts

Atomic Bombshell jammer L’exi-Cuter opened up the season’s scoring against the Garda Belts’ MEDUSA on the first bout by sliding past opposing blocker Suzie Smashbox for one. Freeze Baby – now in her second year for the ABS – brushed past Betty LaRude for the lead and four. Opposing jammer Scootaloo (now playing for the Gardas) stole one as Freeze called the jam. 5-1 Bombshells up.

Suzie Smashbox scored big three jams later for the Gardas as Shiva Shank’n monstered Atomic Bombshell jammer Messi Jigler. Jigler couldn’t find a good path through a cascading Garda pack and Suzie scored fourteen points. Freeze Baby and L’exi-Cuter retook the lead for the ABS over the next two jams. 17-15 Bombshells after ten minutes.

Freeze Baby took a point as Diamond Rough dropped the Garda veteran jammer Rumblebee at a critical point through the initial pass minutes later, and Suzie Smashbox tied it back up for the Gardas at the fifteenth minute (19-19) by sprinting past Bombshell blockers unaware of her flying in behind them. Still, both teams were bringing their A-game this early in the match, playing well and staying out of the box.

MEDUSA sent the Gardas ahead 23-19 as her teammate – Tara Bichapart (formerly of the Minneapolis North Star Rollergirls) – nailed the opposing jammer into no-man’s land at Turn 1. The Bombshells’ Freeze Baby screamed past a strung-out Garda defense for eight, and MEDUSA answered with a four-point jame to take the lead as the teams went into halftime at the 20th minute, 28-27.

L’exi opened the second half by slaloming through turn one, taking the lead jam, four points and yet another lead change for the Atomic Bombshells. Freeze Baby scored 5-4 as ABS co-captain Diamond dropped Scootaloo with a monstrous block, but didn’t call the jam quickly enough to keep Scoots from scoring.

MEDUSA stole two against L’exi’s next lead, and Garda Belt jammer Cassie Rolle scored two to Bombshell Hurtrude Stein’s two before heading to the box. The Bombshells were only able to take three on the power jam before Cassie charged out of the penalty box, took the next lead, and called the jam. 41-36 Bombshells ahead after seven minutes in the half.

Hurtrude scored another point in the following jam, but MEDUSA responded with a four-point of her own. The Garda defense wasn’t holding the ABS jammers very well early in the second half, but they played the pack game very well. They would sprint to the front as soon as both jammers escaped the pack. This had the effect of putting the Bombshells in the back of the pack, giving easy targets for Garda jammers to poach points from just as the ABS jammer would call off the jam. MEDUSA’s four points brought the Gardas within two (42-40).

L’exi took the outside line against Moto Fluzzi and scored three (held back only by Citizen Pain). MEDUSA scored another four (45-44), but suddenly Gardas were heading to the box faster than they could be seated. Only two defenders on a team may sit at a time, so players with penalties must wait until their teammates leave the box to enter themselves.

With Garda Belt defenders revolving in and out, Lexi got the go-ahead in the eleventh minute of the half as she shot through a short Garda pack for nine points. However, the Gardas’ Moto Fluzzi recovered for her team with a nine-point jam of her own as ABS jammer Messi Jigler got stalked by Citizen Pain, then sent to the box on what appeared to be a back block. 54-53 Bombshells up with five minutes to play.

MEDUSA used the remainder of Jigler’s penalty time to get the lead and a grand slam. L’exi-Cuter pulled a rare star pass on the Gardas, taking the jammer star from a returning Jigler and sprinting out of the pack. MEDUSA scored only two more before calling the jam.  Bombshell co-captain Diamond Rough was sent out of the game during this jam on her fifth foul. That left a big hole in the Bombshell line.

With the Gardas now ahead (60-55) and minutes remaining on the clock, Freeze Baby got a lead jam, but a minor back block on the scoring run sent Freeze to the box on accumulated minors. That thrust opposing jammer Anita Spankston into a power jam. Anita scored a quad slam, assisted by both her defenders glomming onto the remaining ABS defender and also by the fact that the Bombshells fielding only three blockers during the jam. MEDUSA took the final lead jam, called it, and scored the win for the Gardas. Final score: 80-57.

Rockits v Dagger Dolls

Doll co-captain Ova Achieva got her team off to a strong start in the third jam by taking eight on a power jam after Killahertz got hit with a track cut for straddling the inside line past several players. Indeed, the Daggers started very well, taking the first five lead jams to bring them to 19-2 after eight minutes. The Rockits kept each of those runs from getting completely out of hand by skating hard and fast as the referees signified each lead jam, but the Dolls had control over their opposing jammers.

Rockits Vuedoo Prodigy and Harmony Killerbruise wrested two lead jams from the Dolls as several Dagger Doll blockers went to the box, but only Vuedoo scored two. The Rockits called a timeout with ten minutes on the clock, Dagger Dolls up 21-4.

The break did well for them; the Rockit Red Wall of years past began to coalesce and kept the Dagger Dolls scoreless for four jams. However, strong, coordinated play from the Dolly pack practically did the same against the Rockits. The Rockits took ten as Harmony scored a double slam on a jammer penalty by Second Hand Smoke (formerly Killaman Jaro), yet that jam was the Rockits’ only major score of the half.  Dolls up 21-14 after fourteen minutes.

Following the power jam, the Dagger Dolls won each scoring opportunity. Psycho took three as Rockits co-captain Frau Scientits held her back from scoring more. Perennial blocking threats Tiki Torture and Wonderbroad teamed up to hold back Harmony Killer while Second Hand Smoke scored seven…though Harmony did sneak three past Smoke before the jam was called. Juke Boxx scored four while Vuedoo Prodigy struggled through a strong pack…and as the game went into halftime, the Dolls scored big on consecutive calls of jammer penalties on Killahertz. At the half, Dolls 46-17 Rockits.

Juke Boxx of the Dagger Dolls went to the jammer line unopposed as Killahertz waited out her final seconds of penalties. Juke’s teammates tore the Rockit pack apart, and Juke Boxx scored fourteen. Both Harmony Killerbruise and Vuedoo Prodigy responded with four point lead jams of their own, but Vue got nailed with a low block for her jammer-on-jammer actions against Ova Achieva. The refs sent Vuedoo to the box, and the Dolls took ten points on the power jam. Dagger Dolls ahead 70-25 after seven minutes of the half.

After the teams exchanged four-point jams, Ova Achieva took to the line against Patently (“Leo”) Offensive. Ova got held up by Rockit pivot Coochie Coup, then sent reeling into turn four by a blocking Vuedoo. Leo took the lead and nine points. Scoring stopped on the track as the Dolls’ defensive blocking squad began to take control. Whether rushing the front as Rockit jammers began to engage the pack or causing enough chaos with 1-2 hits to force penalties, the Dolls had the game in their hand. With five minutes remaining, the Dolls held the lead, 74-40.

Harmony and the Rockit blockers made one more major assault with a nine-point jam against Psycho Novia (holding the agile Dolly for a minute in the pack, but Tiki Torture’s assault on Soylent Mean gave Second Hand Smoke the opportunity to put the Dolls up 81-49. A power jam in the final minute of the game for the Dolls’ Ova Achieva sealed the victory. Final score: Dagger Dolls 86 – 49 Rockits.
