Preview: Hook Line and Sinkher

This weekend, the Minnesota RollerGirls begin the All-Star season at the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium with two matchups that will give fans a taste of the remainder of the season. The big game will be your MNRG All-Stars competing in sanctioned play against the Old Capitol City RollerGirls of Iowa City, IA. In addition, we continue our tradition of mixers with the Loon-a-Ticks taking on the Miss Quitos. Just another arbitrary mixer? Never, fans. Read on…

MNRG v Old Capitol City

Your MNRG All-Stars have returned.

Last year, the MNRG All-Stars – consisting of the best and brightest of our four home teams – placed within the top eight in the world at the WFTDA Championships. With over a thousand flat-track leagues playing the sport, the fact that we placed so high shows the incredible determination and drive of the MNRG. We play this sport very, very well.

The All-Stars open their home stand this weekend against Old Capitol City Roller Girls of Iowa City, IA. The OCCRG is a new league that became a member of the MNRG’s organizing body (the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association - WFTDA) on January 10th, 2012. They’ve been playing since 2008, and our team has frequently spoken of the OCCRG as an incredible rookie league; we’ve run clinics for the team and we’ve played them before they became part of the WFTDA as a full team.

We’re excited to play the inaugural sanctioned bout against this squad, as are members of Old Capitol. We had an opportunity to speak to Left 4 Deadwards and Animal Mother of OCCRG about the coming matchup.

Animal Mother:
I think this time we are far more prepared strategically [to play than in 2011], as well as physically, but getting past that mental game is going to be our challenge.  We’re no slouches, but this is a big year for us, and an incredible, exciting way to start off our WFTDA careers, and so a challenge for us is going to be pushing down those barriers, because I know we can do well and be a force to be reckoned with, but that’s all going to depend on our mindset.

Left 4 Deadwards:
Last time we played them.. that was quite the experience. Having virtually beat every team in Iowa, this was our first taste of playing derby at the WFTDA level. It was definitely an eye opener to never give up, even in the face of defeat. I think we got overwhelmed after the first half and sort of just gave up. Now that we’re WFTDA it is all uphill to battle our way into rankings. Playing against hard teams is what is going to make us better and we’re going to have to learn to adapt to the tough, fast gameplay.

The Old Capitol City Roller Girls are a surprising team. Sometimes we surprise ourselves. Each year we seem to get better and stronger and soon overcome former foes. We learn quickly and work well as a team, We anticipate an exciting year and hope people don’t write off a small town league for little ole Iowa.

Oh, and we’re definitely winning the after party.

Old Capitol will have their hands full. The MNRG All-Stars have not lost a home bout since September 19th, 2009 and are ranked #2 in the North Central region. They play the modern game. You’ll see rapid-fire starts with blockers inches from the jammer line, ready to corral and sit on their opponents for seconds on end. Our team plays ‘smart’ derby in a way that we make the right decisions on the track, but that sort of roller derby is also intense, hard-hitting, and fast.

For those of you who’ve not seen the MNRG All-Stars since their heart-racing win over Naptown last spring, get ready for roller derby like you’ve not seen it.

Welcome to the Roy, Old Cap. Good luck.

And we’re winning the after-party.

Loon-a-Ticks v Miss Quitos

We’ve been running ‘mixer’ bouts for over three years now. If you’re new to the MNRG, the mixers are where we get together teams of players that are either randomly selected or have some sort of arbitrary difference that cuts the players into two teams.  They’re a lot of fun for the players as well as the fans.

This year, we’re playing with the formula a little bit. We’re combining our teams – those not playing in the All-Star bout – into two superteams down color lines. This isn’t a new idea; in fact, our teams regularly merge for scrimmage practices. However, unless you’re a member of the MNRG in some way, you might never get a chance to see these double teams compete. This season’s your chance.

On Saturday, the Dagger Dolls and Atomic Bombshells (aka the Loon-a-Ticks) will take on members of the Rockits and Garda Belts (the Miss Quitos). If you have a favorite team, wear their colors; Green, pink, red, and orange doesn’t need to be put aside this year – your favorite players will just be playing aside another team. If you have two favorite teams, it’s time to see what they can do when they finally see them skate together.

Here’s the roster as it currently stands:

The Loon-a-Ticks

Ema Leethal
Norwegian Mafia
Smoka Hontas
Olga Oglethorpe
Flora Flipabitch
Wonderbroad
Madame de Stompadour
Bombs over Bacon
Sand BlastHER

Hanna Belle Lector

See you there.
