Bout Recap: Minnesota narrowly defeated by Philly, 101-84

Monday, August 08, 2011

This weekend, the Minnesota RollerGirls took on the amazing Philadelphia Liberty Belles. With no video and no text-casting emanating from Philly’s Class of 1923 Arena, many of us in Saint Paul huddled around our phones and computers as John Maddening passed us tantalizing pieces of information via the @mnrgbouts Twitter feed.

Rather than copy and paste Maddening’s serial of 140-character prose, we want to give you the lowdown from the MNRG All-Stars Coach Dan himself. D’anti-gravity, take it away.

Last Saturday, your MNRG All Star team headed to Philadelphia to take on the Liberty Belles who are ranked #2 in the East Region. Philly has long been at the top of the rankings in derby and are always a major contender. Known as a fast paced, heavy hitting team with lots of experience we knew we were in for a battle.

This is the highest ranked team we have played yet, we’ve watched tons footage, practiced scenarios and were ready for war ........or just a really intense game.

For those that followed the twittercast you know the bout was back and forth the whole game. I believe we were at 53-44 at the half after being virtually tied for the prior 7 jams.

Second half. We lost a little ground towards the beginning but after a few more jams tied up the score. And were ahead by just a few points for about 6 jams. It was crazy! And very exciting! From there until the very last jam it was mostly tied. Going into the last jam the score was 86-84 in favor of the Belles. We had some penalty trouble in the very last jam and it hurt us. Final score, 101-84.

The game was incredibly close. We were evenly matched with PRD. I think one more jam could have swung the game the other way.

Even though this counted as a loss on our record I am really proud of how well we did against PRD and how great the team played together. Expect more big things from the All Stars this year!

Sunday morning we travelled to Baltimore for a scrimmage against the #3 ranked team in the East, Charm City. We ended up playing three 30 minute
periods in what developed into a pretty serious scrimmage. It was good practice for us and it was fun to be able to scrimmage a high ranked team in a game that didn’t really matter on paper.

The All Stars will be playing again in October where we head to Indianapolis for our Regional tournament. You should go!

Thanks for reading,

-Dan

Philadelphia’s own Dan Koltonuk also posted an excellent recap of the game that you should definitely take a look at. Congratulations, All-Stars, on such a close game.
