Bout Recap: Minnesota Defeats Dairyland, 196-74

Monday, January 31, 2011

As of last Saturday afternoon, the Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars and the Dairyland Dolls (representing the Mad Rollin’ Dolls of Madison, WI) had met six times on the flat track. Fans have seen this historic rivalry play out for years, going back before the years of WFTDA. Madison supporters may remember with glee the early-morning drubbing that knocked Minnesota out of the 2008 Eastern tournament. ‘Sota fans point to the two-point win just a month later on the floor of the Roy.

Recently, MNRG wondered if their neighbors to the south might want to come up for another go. They’d been given a special opportunity to play in the Xcel Energy Center during a double-header event with the Minnesota Swarm lacrosse team. The MNRG had one problem: no sport court to lay down and play on. MRD happened to have a new one.

So before thousands and thousands of eyes (8911 scanned into the double-header), the MNRG and the Double-Ds fought for leads, scrambled for space, cleared their lanes, and renewed their on-track feud. This time, Minnesota (#2 in the North Central region) picked apart the Dairyland (#3 in the NC) defense and started their interleague season by defeating the Dolls by over one hundred points.

Darling Nikki took the first lead for Madison, but both she and opposing jammer Scarmen Hellectra found ways to score in the opening jam. Scarmen and a returning Harmony Killerbruise (lately of the Oly Rollers) then took nine more points over the next two jams as MEDUSA (Minnesota’s latest transfer from the NSRG) and Killaman Jaro held off their opposition by repeatedly waterfalling in on Madison jammers.

Following a no-lead jam that skewed in Minnesota’s favor both in score (9-4) and in penalties, Madison called a timeout. They were seven minutes in and already behind by fourteen.  The break may have helped - after a four-point jam by Minnesota, Madison took advantage of fierce blocking by their own Charlie Hustle resulting in a power jam opportunity for Mack the Knife. Mack took eight against a speeding Minnesota pack, and Vicious Van GoGo caught three the following jam before being shut down by Minnesota’s Juke Boxx. Madison’s Darling Nikki scored three more as her blocker Aleta the Hun escorted her on the initial pass. Madison had pulled within four with fifteen minutes left in the first half, MNRG 25 - Dolls 21.

Minnesota grabbed control back as L’exi-Cuter found space and took four. Scarmen Hellectra and Madison’s Mack the Knife traded power jams, but only the Minnesota jammer scored as the Minnesota line goated Dutch Oven. Vicious Van GoGo used the remainder of Scar’s time in the box to take two. Three jams later, exceptional blocking by Madison’s Chop Suzzy and Allie Gator held Scarmen from cracking the pack for ninety seconds while Darling Nikki scored thirteen. Tie game with six left in the half, 36-all. The track may have contributed to Scar’s inability to move forward; the Minnesota players had difficulty switching direction and speed on the slow corners of Madison’s new sport court.

Minnesota struggled over the next few minutes to retake the lead, but Madison found its pace. With Vicious Van GoGo and Charlie Hustle in the pack recycling Minnesotans to the back and fast jammers playing the turns with precision., Madison finally took the lead (44-41) on an eight-point jam by Darling Nikki with a minute to go.

Then MEDUSA came to the jammer line for Minnesota against Madison’s Mouse. Slithering past Chop Suzzy, MEDUSA took the lead…and seconds later, a ref sent Mouse to the box. Minnesota screeched the pack to a halt; despite Suzzy’s attempts to land a shoulder on Minnesota from a standstill, MEDUSA lapped the pack three times and came up just short of a quadruple slam as Vicious Van GoGo engaged her on the fourth lap. With the second lead change of the game fresh in their minds, the Dairyland Dolls and the MNRG hit the locker rooms.

Darling Nikki opened the half for Madison wearing the jammer star against Harmony Killerbruise. In the first half, Nikki was the only player for Madison that scored in the double digits.  This time, a Minnesota phalanx of Coochie Coup and Tiki Torture caught her up as Harmony Killerbruise took the lead. Nikki was sent to the box, and Minnesota asserted a sudden pack advantage as the Dairyland Dolls attempted to tag the MNRG scorer. Harmony scored fifteen, and MEDUSA followed up using the remaining time on the jam penalty clock to claim nine. Citizen Pain delayed Mouse in the next jam, leaving Psycho Novia time to score four. In the space of three jams, Minnesota had doubled Madison’s score, 88-44.

The troubles for Madison continued. Mouse scored two in the fitth jam as her teammate Charlie Hustle went toe-to-toe with opposing jammer Vuedoo Prodigy, yet Vue still found a way to steal three points on the jam. MEDUSA followed with another power jam opportunity on Darling Nikki, this time pulling off a quadruple slam. Psycho followed up for nineteen, playing off a 5-2 advantage before Nikki returned to the track. 132-46 Minnesota up with nineteen left to play.

Following a Madison timeout, Mack The Knife brushed past Minnesota’s Juke Boxx to take the lead and scored eight, but that would be the last point Madison would score for seven minutes. Minnesota began to establish a commanding lead by using rear blocker/hunters Juke Boxx and Tiki Torture to hinder Madison’s jammer movement, freeing front blockers to escort jammers through. MNRG also took advantage of a faltering Madison pack that was still trying to find a way to get back into the game at the expense of many trips to the penalty box. After two more power jams in the MNRG’s favor, Minnesota was ahead 178-59.

As the minutes wore away, Madison became less distracted by the gap and more focused on simply scoring. Mack the Knife and Vicious Van GoGo both took leads and kept the clock running after their opposing jammers had cleared the pack; the tactic kept the score difference about even…but even so, Mack called off the final jam before L’exi-Cuter could attempt one more lap to reach the double-century mark.  With a tired whoop from the crowd (the game had just gone past midnight), Minnesota took the win, 196-74.

Darling Nikki led the scoring for the Dairyland Dolls with 27 points, but did not score at all in the second half. Mack the Knife’s 25 were all second-half points.

MEDUSA was the all-around top scorer for Minnesota, taking 72 points (largely on power jams). Psycho Novia and Harmony Killerbruise also had tremendous games, both scoring over forty each.
