Announcement: MNRG late summer update
Monday, August 08, 2011
We’ve been overwhelmed with the metric ton of good news that the league’s been privy to…so we’re going to do this rapid-fire, bullet-point style. Hang on to your helmet.
- It all starts again –The MNRG home season begins in just over two months. Our first bout’s on October 15th at the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium. Season tickets are available until the day of the first bout, and our VIP seating for groups of fans can still be reserved as well. Check out the tickets page for the full details.
- We are headed to Indianapolis… – Your Minnesota RollerGirl All-Stars have once again been invited to the WFTDA’s North Central Regional tournament. The tournament will take place this year in the home of that other great American race sport, Indianapolis, IN, hosted by Indy’s own Naptown Roller Girls. We’ve been seeded #3. This is the highest that we’ve ever been ranked going into a regional tournament. Our first bout is against our long-time rivals, the 6th-seeded Dairyland Dolls of Madison, WI. If we defeat the Double-Ds, that sends us into the semi-final round, where we’ll be one win away from representing our fans and the North Central region at the 2011 Championships.
- ...And we want you to come – We loved seeing so many of you at last year’s tournament. We’ll have information soon on hotels for the tournament weekend (October 7-9). We expect that no one will be overlooking us this year; in fact, we’re heading into this tournament season knowing that everyone will be gunning for us. Join us from the sidelines and cheer for your MNRG favorites!
- World class - MEDUSA and Juke Boxx? Yeah, they’re pretty good. Check out our short article on what they just qualified for. Who’s up for a road trip to Toronto?
- Victory over Nashville – We took out Nashville’s Music City All-Stars on a hot Tennessee evening in July, 130-84. Nashville was the other surprise contender at last year’s Championships, but since we didn’t have a chance to play them there, they invited us south of the Mason/Dixon line to their home track. We had quite a game; Nashville took an early lead (18-3) as the southern monster Ramb0 Samb0 hit us with a triple slam, but our All-Stars backhanded them with our speed and skill as Harmony Killerbruise scored eight and Juke Boxx took advantage of space created by her packmates to jump the apex twice for fifteen points. By the end of the first half, Minnesota had pulled far ahead, 78-33. Despite a late rally, Minnesota took the win. One MNRG player noted that this was a bout we might not have won in April; she noted that experience from previous bouts and the All-Stars’ rigorous training program was responsible for the victory.
- Welcome to Indiana – Later that weekend, we also took on Evansville, Indiana’s Demolition City. That was a smaller bout, but it gave us the opportunity to get our first look at this newly-minted WFTDA league (ranked 21st in the North Central region). We took the win, 221-28.
- One jam short – We’ll let Coach Dan cover this narrow defeat against Philadelphia. A small loss to this roller derby powerhouse was almost unimaginable last season; now we’re waiting for the return bout.
More news is coming. The MNRG is days away from its annual draft party, while more tournament news is just around the corner. We’ll keep you up to date on the tournament site, tickets, and hotel accommodations. A week after the regional tournament? The home season begins.
