Bout Preview: Preview of Badges for Bruises

Thursday, February 03, 2011

Two weeks ago, the Rockits relaunched and took the Golden Skate for the fourth time in MNRG history.

Last week, the best of the Minnesota RollerGirls resoundingly defeated the Dairyland Dolls of Madison, WI and smashed the attendance record for the modern roller derby movement.

Ready for round three, MNRG fans?

The MNRG return to the Legendary Roy Wilkins Auditorium this Saturday for an doubleheader of furious action. With the Golden Skate safely in a secret Rockit lair (reputed to be deep within the recesses of Saint Paul’s Lowertown District), the four hometeams have reformed into the locus of awesome known as the Minnesota RollerGirls.

Twenty of those women have been chosen to represent Minnesota against travel teams from across the nation. They will roam the country this year seeking hard-fought experience to bring to the WFTDA tournaments this fall. The next three bouts at the Roy will highlight the army-and-aqua clad All-Stars as they continue the season that they started on the track at the Xcel Energy Center this past weekend.

Now…a quick primer. Up to twenty women may be chosen by a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association league to represent them in interleague play. Of those, sixteen women on a team will actually lace up that night for the bout…fourteen players and two alternates. Those women go forth and kick as much ass as they can for their league.

On Saturday, the MNRG All-Stars will play the Tucson Saddletramps of Tucson, AZ. Tucson is ranked 9th in the Western Region; we’re ranked #2 here in the Midwestern ‘North Central’ region (and also ranked on the national DNN Power Rankings at #14). Don’t let that disparity fool you; Tucson hails from what is arguably the strongest region in modern roller derby. This will not be an easy match.

We asked Harmony Killerbruise her recollections of the Tramps. As a member of the Oly Rollers (the present #2 league in the nation), Harmony and the Cosa Nostra Donnas took on the Saddletramps at Western Regionals in 2010. They defeated the Tucson team 267-19. Here’s what she told us:

“I…know that Sami Automatic was pretty much the core of their team and is probably their biggest jammer threat and if given an opportunity she can put up some points.  I know that she has been around for a while.  Helen Wheels is also a pretty good blocker, also has been around a long time. Bianca Trohl was a pretty good jammer.

Its hard to really remember a lot,...but I do remember them playing a pretty classic game, good at forming walls and knowing where they need to be.”

The MNRG is relatively certain that they will not have quite the fortune that Oly had at Western Regionals. However, this will be an excellent test for the MNRG 2011 lineup; Minnesota will be taking on a team that they’ve never seen live, so the MNRG All-Stars get a shot to try their strategies and tactics blind against an very competent team.

But ladies and gentlemen, the MNRG is not merely the All-Stars. Many of the others skate all year as well and will be putting on three mashup matches to complement the All-Star games through the remainder of the season. This month, the players of the MNRG will pay tribute to the great Minnesotan legend of timber, flannel shirts, and obscenely large bovines.  That’s right folks…the warmup match this month will be the Paula Bunyans against the Babes!

We’ve been told a LOT of plaid is involved.

These mashups are hard to predict but easy to cheer for. You’ve seen these women play hard against one another wearing hometown green, pink, red, and orange. Now you’ll see a Doll and a Rockit link up and drop a Bombshell jammer, or a pack full of Gardas and Dagger Dolls pinball a Rockit jammer into a ref. These are fun matches; get into the spirit. Wear plaid, wear horns, pick a team and make some signs.
