Rookie Series

Who doesn’t want a reminder of how much of a rebel you are out on the track? That’s what Rhea Volt’s name does for her. The reminder of a revolution…a revolt!

Rhea Volt #84 started skating for the Rockits this year. The team’s acquisition of her was new, and so was the sport’s. Volt started skating derby just a short year ago. One of her favorite memories from bootcamp (bootcamp is part of the recruiting process; a summer-long training and tryout period for want-to-be skaters and referees) is actually being hit*! “A. Whore [a transfer recruit during bootcamp 2012 and current skater for the Dagger Dolls], an amazing skater and veteran to derby, took a shoulder to my chest at scrimmage and it practically knocked the wind out of me. I remember thinking, ‘Oh! So that’s what it’s like to really get hit!’” Since her bootcamp days, Volt now has plenty of other major hits under her belt and also delivers them just as painfully.

Remembering her first home team bout (Fresh Meat Raffle on October 6, 2012), Volt describes it as one of her favorite nights…*ever*. She talks about the Rockits winning the Guilded Steak and how incredible it was (and is!) to skate with her fabulous teammates. Even as she was taking hits from some of the hardest hitting girls out there, the smile never left her face.

It’s clear that Volt has drive. She demonstrates it outside of derby, too, through travel and exploration. She lives for spontaneous road trips and living abroad. When she can’t travel outside of the area, she’s exploring the Twin Cities and maxes out her time on local music, figuring out how to cook and the best places to eat, and doing the proverbial dance-like-an-idiot-because-it’s-the-best.
