Bout Recap: Saint Paul’s MNRG Team B takes out Minneapolis’ Northern Lights, 71-57

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

On June 16th, the MNRG All-Star Team B took on Minneapolis’ own North Star Rollergirls Northern Lights in the opening bout before the All-Stars played the Windy City Rollers. After several lead changes early in the game, the North Stars took the lead and held it into halftime (36 - 34). Minnesota went ahead and stayed ahead on a trio of second half 10-point jams.

Here’s how that game happened:

Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars Team B vs North Star Rollergirls Northern Lights

20 minutes on the clock. First half.

First jam: Obscene Sheen (NSRG) v Fannie Tanner (MNRG).  Fannie’s all angles and joints, knocking through the NSRG pack to get the lead. That’s Fannie, Mister Kodiak…Fannie gets four.

2nd minute: One thing for sure. The current trend of starting from the jammer line isn’t slowing down the pace of play. The hitting in that pack is intense, but Cinnamon American takes the lead and brings the NSRG ahead. Slasha Veinforya keeps dropping the more slight Bombs over Bacon.

3rd minute: These are fast jams. Get up from the bench, fly to the jammer line. Get in position and have an idea what you’re going to do there. If you don’t, you get passed.Rita retakes the lead for MNRG.

5th minute: Gigi Whiz floats past Minnesota’s front line and passes through the pack. Makes it look pretty easy. Northern Lights are in top form today.

7th minute: But MNRG’s Fannie takes the next lead…and finds herself behind a three-wall. She doesn’t notice NSRG opposing jammer Obscene Sheen on the sneak. Fannie gets four, Sheen takes three. NSRG still ahead, 16-15.

8th minute: NSRG vet Kayzilla whips around the outside of the pack, takes lead, and just keeps accelerating while her team fiercely batters the MNRG pack. NSRG is playing very, very aggressively tonight. Kay scores four. Minnesota has one in the box.

9th minute: SLOW PACK off the jammer line as the pack delays to some boos. Makes sense for MNRG to do that with Sweet Justice still in the box; not sure why NSRG played along. Rita’s through for a nice little four as she claws through opposition.

10th minute: Cinnamon American just parted the MNRG pack like it wasn’t all that, gets the lead, and comes back around…but Messi’s on her heels and steals three.

11th minute: FANNIE pulls the lead while the MNRG Great Wall of Saint Paul finally forms up and sucks the momentum from NSRG’s Jackie OMG. That’s a lead change – again. We’ve gone back and forth four times already.

16th minute: Ladies and gentlemen, that’s ANOTHER lead change. This time, it’s largely due to the work of the marvelous Katerina Hitt and Kayzilla. These two NSRG players have been playing at a high level for a long, long time and they’re making short work of a disorganized MNRG pack as they jam. Katerina knocks out Bombs over Bacon to take the lead, Kay veers like an unstoppable monster through the pack…but the MNRG are still only ten points behind. North Stars aren’t capitalizing as much as they’d like, yet Minnesota hasn’t scored since Fannie’s lead change. 36-26, NSRG ahead.

17th minute: Interesting. The North Star pivots not only direct their blockers; they also seem to have a tendency to suggest when to call off the jam to their jammers. That could get them in trouble if a ref takes it to be a call of the jam…Meanwhile, Bombs Over Bacon makes short work of a short NSRG pack and scores seven. Minnesota’s back on the hunt. AND OOPS. NSRG’s opposing jammer Cinnamon American just tripped Bacon. That’s a power jam.

18th minute: Holy crap, the North Star pack just killed the power jam dead. HUGE respect for the patient work by Obscene Sheen, Katerina Hitt, and Rosalind Shanklin in holding back Rita Rawkus. A penalty by both Rita and Cinnamon send them back to the penalty box for a very short visit each.

Last jam of the half: MNRG calls a timeout. Full pack for each team; Messi Jigler gets a lead, but can only convert one point before calling the jam.

HALFTIME: NSRG Northern Lights 36- MNRG Team B 34. This is far closer than you would expect from the two leagues’ relative rankings. North Star is holding us back in the pack, not only due to solid walls but also because of some really brutal hitting that Minnesota isn’t expecting. However, the NSRG jammers aren’t really able to take advantage of their defense; only one jam by Cinnamon American has scored more than five points.

Here comes the second half:

First jam: Ye gods. Two strong packs keep the jammers pushing through for the first lead jam of the half. Fannie Tanner leaps from one side to the other of the pack, finds a crack, and blasts through the lapping pass for three points.  LEAD CHANGE #6.

22nd minute: Bombs Over Bacon flies through the pack again – she’s overcome that first bad jam against Cinnamon American long ago – and keeps flying. Bully Jean and Moto Fluzzi are holding back Cinnamon very well; Bombs scores ten. Minnesota ahead 47-36.

24th minute: Katerina and Kayzilla are back at it; Kat takes the lead while Kay holds up MNRG’s jammer Moto Fluzzi – but Moto recovers and Stryper holds Kat back long enough that the North Star vet calls it off after scoring only one.

26th minute: NSRG jammer Gigi Whiz gets held long enough that she converts to defense – but only after Messi Jigler scores ten. Messi’s doing a great job tonight, but the win of that jam was an impregnable MNRG wall of Sweet Justice, Salvador Brawlie, Citizen Pain, and Bully Jean. Minnesota is now up by 20!

27th minute: NSRG all-around threat Obscene Sheen applies her fast-moving strides to shutting down Fannie Tanner. Fannie gets past, but not before Katerina Hitt scores one.

29th minute: Official timeout. A tape malfunction on the track stops the action, the audience grabs a beer, and the players start sitting on one another out of boredom. Good times.

30th minute: POWER JAM Minnesota. Lead jammer for NSRG Jackie OMG gets knocked out by MNRG star blocker Citizen Pain, comes back in in front of MNRG players in the front, and gets sent out on a track cut. Jackie’s still sitting when the whistle blows for the end of a jam. I smell a go-ahead by MNRG.

32nd minute: Another big jam by the fabulous Messi Jigler and another penalty for Jackie OMG. Messi scores ten, while Rita Rawkus calls the plays in the pack. NSRG is running out of time. Minnesota up, 67-43.

35th minute: Fannie starts skating unopposed as Jackie sits in the box. Minnesota scores four, but Jackie OMG comes back in and takes four as well. Risky to let the opposing jammer score to burn the clock, but Minnesota kept the North Stars to eleven points this half so far.

37th minute: Katerina with the lead jam and has a full pack. Nonetheless, she calls off the jam because Bombs Over Bacon is just a stride or two behind her. More tape is brought out and an official timeout is called.

39th minute: The NSRG pack comes through for their jammer, keeping Moto Fluzzi back long enough to get Cinnamon through on the score. North Stars are almost out of time, but they’ve been playing well tonight. Another timeout called – this time by the NSRG.

FINAL: That’s it! Kayzilla and Gigi get two more chances to score, but Minnesota’s defense just starts accelerating – keeping the jammers from scoring more than a few points. The MNRG take the win, out scoring the North Stars 37 to 21 in the second half – and really, just outpacing their opponents. Some 2nd-half penalties gave Minnesota a chance to go ahead, but the MNRG’s three ten-point jams raised them past danger. Final score: Minnesota Team B 71 – North Star Northern Lights 57.
