Bout Preview: Seeing Double - the preview
Thursday, February 14, 2013
The Minnesota RollerGirls return once again to the Xcel Energy Center this Saturday. The MNRG All-Stars - playing in their army and aqua colors - will transform the home of the Swarm into the largest roller derby stadium in the Midwest. Following the Swarm’s game against the Calgary Roughnecks, your Minnesota RollerGirls will take on Old Capitol City. Yes, Iowa City’s finest must once again play the best of the upper Midwest.

MNRG All-Stars vs Old Capitol City Roller Girls
Last year, Minnesota played Old Cap in their very first game ever as a full WFTDA flat track derby game. Old Capitol played whistle to whistle, but the MNRG handed them a pretty hefty defeat (362-58).
This year, Old Capitol is going to have to handle a brand new set of All-Stars. Coach D’Antigravity is throwing a team of MNRG players at them that has not seen as much action on the interleague circuit. You’ll be getting an early look at the less-proven talent on the All-Star squad; with the March bout against Texas only weeks away, we’ll see who might be ready to take on the beast of the South.
…like the back of her helmet. One massive advantage that Old Cap will bring to the Xcel is that their team is constantly training with one another. Unlike Minnesota, Iowa City’s roller derby league has no intra-league teams like the Dagger Dolls and Bombshells; just two touring interleague that work closely with one another throughout the year. They know each other’s strengths - and how to back one another up. MNRG’s All-Star team is just beginning to spin up after November’s WFTDA Championships. Minnesota’s talent is deep, but will the lack of regular practices be a factor against them?
The pack is the thing. If you’re going to try out some of Minnesota’s up-and-coming jammers, you want a rock-solid pack. Three of the MNRG’s finest blockers - Crust Almighty, Buzz Tightrear, and Diamond Rough - are all rostered for Saturday’s bout. They’ll be holding the pack alongside defensive standouts such as Madame de Stompadour and Rita Rawkus. Old Cap fields an big, agile team (watch for brickbats Ima Goldiggah and BatR Up in particular); however, they’re going to be spending a lot of time trying to peel the MNRG defense off their jammer.
Any player a jammer. It’s actually hard to tell who Coach Dan will hand the star to; the roster is full of players able to hold multiple positions. Moto Fluzzi, Ova Achieva, Bombs Over Bacon…Minnesota trains their best to handle anything. Still, we’ll get to see who can break that Iowa pack the best.
…and lacrosse! The Swarm have been fantastic partners over the years; we’re excited to take you into the Xcel to see what Minnesota’s premier lacrosse team can do. Get there early and grab a seat. You won’t be sorry.
Also. Afterparty. When the final whistle blows, head down to Camp Bar. We’ll see you for huge cocktails, a great dance floor, and Surly all night.
See you there.
