Bout Preview: Skate Invaders Preview - MNRG All-Stars v Naptown Tornado Sirens
Monday, March 28, 2011
Naptown Tornado Sirens (Indianapolis) v The MNRG All-Stars
It’s been quite a year for the Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars. They’ve won the past seven games against teams travelling to Saint Paul. In the past three months, they’ve soundly beat Tucson, DC, and Madison. In the first quarter of 2010, they started in the WFTDA rankings as 7th in the North Central regional, played solidly throughout the summer, then surged through the NC tournament to come out in 2nd for the year. The MNRG will now go for the eighth straight win on home turf against the OTHER great story coming out of the North Central’s 2010 derby season.
The Naptown Tornado Sirens began in 11th for the region in the first quarter of 2010, but played some amazing roller derby early in the year against the Chicago Outfit and at the infamous East Coast Extravaganza. Their team quickly climbed into the top ten of the North Central. In September, they joined the MNRG and eight other teams at the Midwest’s regional tournament. Ranked #9 going in, they stormed past Saint Louis’ Arch Rivals and defeated the Brewcity Bruisers to take 6th place in the tournament. Since then, Naptown’s been on an undefeated tear through the lower Midwest’s mid-ranked teams and is currently 7-0.
One of these streaks is about to come to an end. Here’s what you should know as you watch our teams battle it out on Saturday night:
WFTDA rankings: Minnesota is ranked 2nd in the North Central Region. Naptown’s Tornado Sirens are 6th in the same region. The gap in skill level between the top and the middle of the the NC’s top ten is getting smaller and smaller. We’ll see how small it gets after Saturday.
Out - Naughty Kitty; In - Coochie Coup: Minnesota’s co-captain Coochie Coup returns to pivot duty after a month’s hiatus. Naptown: beware the bony shoulders and the non-stop commentary.
Same numbers of syllables as ‘Suzie Smashbox’: You all know the clapping chant for the Garda Belt speedster? In Naptown, the chant is: “Will-a Hoe-flinch?” Willa is an ex-inline speed skater with a hell of a top gear. Don’t give this one space to accelerate.
Stop. That. Canadian: Last month’s star jammer against DC was the fleet-footed L’exi-cuter, scoring 57 points and taking the lead on all seven of her jams. She usually needs one good jam to solve a team; the longer she can be held from getting that first lead jam, the better off the opposing team will be.
Out - Tara Skatesov; In - Killahertz: This Rockit will be wearing her All-Star blues as she takes to the track against Naptown. Killahertz isn’t just good for her infamous bone-compressing hits; word is that she’s been woodshedding on her speed. Watch her appear from nowhere…and leave her opponent on the ground.
Must be the Speedway: Naptown has more than one fast, smart jammer. In addition to Willa Hoeflinch, keep your eyes on Maiden America and Amooze Booche. Maiden’s the big scorer in their recent run, but Amooze has been keeping pace with her grand slams. Minnesota didn’t see her play at Regionals due to injury, but she’s been putting up the numbers since.
Out - Psycho Novia; In - Angelfire: With Psycho unavailable this month, the captains and Coach Dan chose Dagger Doll blocker/jammer Angelfire to replace her in the roster of 14. With so many blocker/jammers on staff, it looks like Minnesota will be playing a blocking game that takes advantage of our ability to execute hits at high speeds. Angelfire contributed a great deal to the Tucson bout - this will be another test of her abilities.
Introducing the Naptown D: Fans of the MNRG, meet Shadi Layne, Ima Hurchu, Cereal Killer, and Ana Slays Ya. If Minnesota can’t find a way around these women, it’ll be a long, long night for the women in blue. They impressed the crowd at Regionals with their ability to get their jammers through some incredible interference from Chicago, Brewcity, and Arch Rival; we’ll see if they can delay Minnesota’s finest long enough to shock us into defeat.
Can you breathe at Mach 3?: Minnesota has allowed an average of 53 points to be scored on them over the past three bouts. This is in large part due to the speed of our packs. If the opposing team gets that elusive lead jam, the Minnesota defense blasts off, keeping pace with the opposing jammer. The jammer keeps up, but their blocking staff cannot. Full marks go to rear blocker specialists Tiki Torture, Vuedoo Prodigy, and Citizen Pain for their ability to deny the other teams’ jammer re-entrance through the pack at high speeds.
The Naptown bout is Minnesota’s to take. Minnesota has the homecourt advantage - as well as the rankings and wins to prove that there is no hype behind the MNRG. All Minnesota has to do is win. Sounds so easy, doesn’t it? But nothing’s ever simple, and Naptown will likely have some surprises for the Minnesota All-Stars.
