Featured Skater: Smoka Hontas #N8V

smoka

Aspiring to be on the Minnesota RollerGirls wasn’t the only goal for Smoka Hontas. She upped the ante and had her sights on the league’s traveling charter team, the All-Stars, and has worked her tail off to be considered one of the elite derby girls.

Just think about this growth: Smoka’s been skating since 2007; she joined the Minnesota RollerGirls in 2010 as an Atomic Bombshell; it’s now 2013 and the girl’s an All-Star. Longevity alone, the numbers are in Smoka’s favor of being a total domination on the track. But it takes more than that to be an All-Star.

She achieved her goal of becoming an All-Star by utilizing all practice time (which, by the way is two hours a practice, three times a week) and also committing to do extra workouts and agility training off the track with the Atomic Bombshells and on her own. During this time, she quickly realized she had to put her derby life first and foremost if she was going to make the team, and she went all in.

Smoka was drafted to the All-Stars in January 2013 and will be skating in the Seeing Double Header with the Swarm bout on Saturday, February 16. Her season is just beginning as an All-Star while she continues to skate and wrap up her season with the Atomic Bombshells. Smoka is looking forward to finishing the home team season by hopefully clutching the golden skate after the championship bout on April 6, as well as traveling with the All-Stars as that season ramps up.

While roller derby takes up a huge chunk of her time, Smoka adds even more to her plate. During the day, she helps lead an adult day program for developmentally disabled individuals; she talks to Minneapolis children in the American Indian community about healthy choices; and she also manages to keep up with her other hobbies like movies, music, art, running, and spending time with friends and family.
