Tournament Preview: The All-Stars race to Indianapolis
Wednesday, October 05, 2011
Your Minnesota RollerGirls All-Stars are heading to Indianapolis next weekend. This isn’t just any bout, mind you. This is the big one; the All-Stars are playing for entrance to the single-most prestigious tournament in roller derby…the 2011 WFTDA Championships in November. To get one of those berths, your All-Stars must do the following:
- On Friday, October 8th at noon CDT, the MNRG faces the Dairyland Dolls of Madison. What’s that? You’ve seen that bout before? That’s the way the bracket fell; our old rivals Madison is 6th-ranked in the North Central Region, and Minnesota is 3rd. A win here sends Minnesota to the semi-finals - a loss sends them into the consolation bracket. We have a long rivalry with Madison, and we are heavy favorites to win. Assuming that…
- On Saturday, October 9th at noon CDT, the MNRG will play in the semifinals against the very physical Detroit Derby Girls. This match has been in the works since LAST year’s playoff, when Minnesota shocked derby fans everywhere by knocking the DDG out of Championship contention. Detroit has been training all year for this moment. They’ve never gone to the North Central playoff finals, and they believe this is the year to do it. We have other plans. Detroit may be ranked higher than us, but we’re confident that our passion and long hours of training are going to outmatch Detroit game. Should Minnesota win, we clinch a place at the championships. If not, it’s overtime as we go for the 3rd-place slot. And here’s where it gets interesting…
- Play-off finals: On Sunday, October 10th at 5:20pm CDT the MNRG will play Windy City for the North Central title. Windy has not yet been defeated by a North Central team. It’s a perfect record that stands since 2007. We’re ready to let them down hard and take the North Central trophy.
- Play-off 3rd-place bout: On Sunday, October 10th at 3:20pm CDT, the MNRG might play Naptown or Cincy for 3rd-place. Look. We know how good we are, but there’s a small chance that Detroit could surprise us. If so, we will either play Indianapolis’ Naptown Tornado Sirens on their own home turf or Cincinnati in our first bout against them since 2008. Either way, we’ve got our tickets booked for the Championships; we AREN’T going to let them take our spot.
Want to watch?
If you love a road trip, we want you there at the North Central Playoffs in Indianapolis. Naptown’s hosting, and the word is they’re rolling out the carpet for fans from all over the Midwest. Check out their website to learn about hotels and tickets. Wear your colors, and we’ll see you there.
If you can’t make that trip, the WFTDA has you covered. This year, they’re hosting a free feed from the heart of Indianapolis for viewing the entire tournament from whistle to whistle. The tournament is 17 games long. We’ll keep track of when the next games are for you; we’ll be updating you regularly through the MNRG Facebook group, our Twitter feed (@mnrg) as well as the fantastic @mnrgbouts feed.
What, you want an EXCELLENT view from Minnesota? Easy. Go to wftda.com on bout day (set your clocks! Our first bout is noon CDT on Friday), click on the tournament coverage, and buy the $20 PPV high-def steaming feed. Our own skaters have been using this feed to watch the bouts in the other regions (this weekend, it’s the South’s turn), and no one can stop talking about how clear it is. You’ll see everything…and if you miss a game or want to see more of the entire Playoff tournament, the $20 gets you access to on-demand replays of every single bout for 90 days.
Minnesota’s ready to take on the Midwest. Join us.
