Announcement: Tryouts are coming! Tryouts are coming!
Wednesday, May 11, 2011
Tryouts take place June 12, 2pm at Roy Wilkins
I’ve you’ve been waiting for the chance to become a rollergirl, your time has arrived. Once a year, we hold rigorous tryouts to draft a batch of rookies into our summer-long bootcamp. This year’s tryouts will take place June 12 at 2pm at Roy Wilkins Auditorium in downtown St. Paul.
Tryouts last around four hours (roughly three of those doing drills and activities on skates). In order to be eligible, you must:
- Be a female aged 21 years or older.
- Have primary health insurance.
- Have appropriate gear (quad roller skates and safety gear including knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, and mouth guard).
Those interested in being referees are also required to attend tryouts.
For more information about tryouts and to join our recruits message board, contact Honeydew Felon at recruiting@mnrollergirls.com.
How can I get ready for tryouts?
Attend one of our preparatory clinics! For more information on the clinics, see our Tryouts & Transfers page.
What if I currently skate for another league?
It’s possible to transfer into the Minnesota RollerGirls. For more information on our transfer skater requirements, see our Tryouts & Transfers page or fill out the Transfer Inquiry Form.
What happens after tryouts?
At the end of the day, you’ll find out whether you made it through tryouts or not. Don’t be bummed ... lots of girls try out and few make it into bootcamp, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try! And there’s always next year. By attending tryouts, you’ll get a really good idea of what skills you need to work on.
If you make the cut at tryouts, you’ll be expected to attend 75% of the summer bootcamp practice sessions. At these sessions, you’ll start by getting your body ready for the intense level of activity to come by doing a lot of off-skate work. After the first week of mostly off-skate activities, each week will include more on-skate drills and eventually scrimmage time.
By the end of bootcamp, you’ll be ready to be drafted onto a team. Bootcamp attendees aren’t guaranteed a spot on the league, but it’s the only way to get in (other than transferring) and most do get drafted.
Bootcamp is intense, but very fun and you’ll get to meet lots of other league members who guest train and attend to stay in shape over the summer break.
