Announcement: Two Minnesota RollerGirls to take part in Red Bull Crashed Ice “Ice Cross” event
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Starting Thursday, January 12 at 1pm, Diamond Rough and Hurtrude Stein - both members of the Atomic Bombshells and All-Stars - will take to a different kind of track ... a downhill ice track filled with obstacles, jumps, and a 90 degree turn at the top of a 16’ climb up the side of a building in the Red Bull Crashed Ice event.
Both Minnesota RollerGirls are former competitive hockey players and know their way around the ice as well as they do around the derby track, so this event is a natural fit for their agile skating abilities. However, there will be some major differences from what they’ve become accustomed to on the derby track. Namely, most contact is illegal in this sport, so these natural blockers will need to dial back their blocking instincts and focus on getting down the 382 yard long course that drops over 131 feet faster than their competitors.
There are five US women competing in the event and we believe this is the first time any US women have competed. Read more about the event, the course, and more in the Star Tribune’s Crashed Ice: Fast and Furious and Sugar, spice and downhill on ice articles and watch a video from Red Bull previewing the event.
You can find information about the schedule, rules, event FAQs, and a spectator’s guide on the Red Bull Crashed Ice website.
Hope to see you there wearing your Minnesota RollerGirls gear in support of these two amazing skaters!
