Bout Preview: You Betcha Brawl preview
Wednesday, March 02, 2011
What’s that? The seventh season’s almost done? It’s just gone by so quickly. We started this home season in October and watched our Minnesota RollerGirls compete for the Golden Skate. From that competition came the newest iteration of the MNRG’s All-Stars; they’ve gone and defeated Tucson and Madison by over 100 points each over the past two months.
It’s March and it’s time to fly in another amazing team. This time, the DC Rollergirls will pit their skills and hip-checks against our own MNRG All-Stars on the Roy Wilkins Auditorium track this Saturday (doors open at 6:30pm). What’s more, our other players don’t like sitting on their hands when other people are skating, so we are putting on another fast-paced mixer of MNRG players from the past and present for you to enjoy.
DC Rollergirls All-Stars v MNRG All-Stars
The District of Columbia has roller derby. If you’ve been hearing about roller derby for any length of time, that fact shouldn’t be surprising. Every town and city is catching the derby bug. However, DC is one of those special leagues in the top ten of their region. This team knows how to play, and they’ve been part of the tournament scene for two years. Right now, member leagues of their region (the powerful East) rank them #9 - just behind Providence, a team we beat last year by only four points.
DC will be playing the 2011 version of the Minnesota RollerGirls, ranked #2 in the North Central region and unofficially ranked somewhere between #9 (Flat Track Stats) and #14 (DNN) nationally. Right now, playing Minnesota is a bit like falling into a really polite pit of wolverines. The MNRG is clearly want to shred DC, but they’ll do it with a please and thank-you. That’s Minnesota Nice.
What you should know:
DC jammers to mistrust: You’ll want to watch for a couple of women wearing the DC jammer star. Both Sookie Slaughterhouse and Small Frye have the speed to be able to take advantage of a power jam. Frye and Sookie dropped quad slams in last year’s tournament play which means that not only are they excellent jammers, but that their defense has the capacity to slow a pack to a halt. The difference between a 10-point jam and a 20-point jam is usually the jammer’s blocking staff finding ways to stop the other team from moving forward. Frye and Sookie’s abilities are potentially concerning. Minnesota plays a version of roller derby where we score in fours and fives, then quickly start the next jam. A big score from a potential DC power jam will cancel out five jams of our own progress, so we’ll need to watch out for power jam opportunities from the other side. On the other hand, MNRG jammers have been spending less and less time in the box over the past year. It’s hard to drop a quad slam on a team who’s opposing jammer is still on the track. This might not be a big worry.
Minnesota rotation #1: Out: Angelfire - In: Juke Boxx. We lose Angel’s cool-headed mid-pack defense and utility jamming and gain Juke’s monstering of stragglers, inattentive blockers, and jammers in the back…as well as her own clutch jamming.
DC’s penalty problem: It’s hard to be able to get good scouting on a league outside of our own region. Roller derby is just starting to figure out how to spread news about individual leagues, and so you have to pick through scoresheets and recaps written by our peers across the nation. One thing that’s clear is that DC has a few problems with getting penalties at bad times. That’s not a killer, but it’s going to be a challenge for DC to overcome. Minnesota has become something of a specialist at milking points off of teams with many players in the penalty box. Our players call it ‘minivanning’ and from all accounts, it’s not a comfortable position to be in.
Minnesota rotation #2: Out: Coochie Coup - In: Naughty Kitty. All-star co-captain Coochie will not be playing on Saturday. Dagger Doll pivot standout Naughty Kitty will be taking her place. This isn’t Kitty’s first time playing on an All-Star team, but it will be the first time that she wears the aqua and army for the MNRG. Please give her a big welcome as she sits on jammers all night long.
