Bombshells over Dagger Dolls on the Hidden Derby Track

By Fire Wally

The Atomic Bombshells beat the Dagger Dolls convincingly during the second bout of “The Mystery of the Hidden Derby Track”, leading from the starting whistle to the final score of 116-83. Star Bombshell jammers Fannie Tanner and Crowella De Vil both performed at their best, and Orange blocking lines held back the Dagger Doll jammers long enough for the Bombshells to consistently win lead jammer. The Bombshells victory puts them at a 2-0 record, another step closer towards their goal of winning the Season 11 Golden Skate.

There were plenty of bright spots in the Dagger Dolls performance as well. A string of lead jammer calls for Killsey McMurder, BiPolar Bear, and Winona Collider through the middle of the second half brought the Dolls as close as a 17-point deficit with just 10 minutes left in the game. Rookie phenom Jacked Pipes managed a few big jams and accrued fewer jammer penalties, showing greater patience as she fought through the Bombshell blockers. The Dolls also saw excellent blocking performances from BiPolar Bear, who earned the ScutiePie Hot Pants Hot Shot award for a couple of bone-shattering hits, and new Fargo-Moorhead transfer Polly Punchkin, who was named the Derby 4 All Game Changer.

After momentum begun to swing back to the Bombshells side near the close of the second half, Bombshells coach Rocky Horror motioned frantically for his jammer to call off the jam with time remaining so that he could quickly call a time out. The Bombshells wanted to put Crowella De Vil on the jammer line one last time before a family move to Duluth ends her skating career with the Minnesota RollerGirls. Crow fought one last time for lead, recovering from hits by MEDUSA and Shiver Me Kimbers before dodging around the outside of the Dolls’ wall, earning lead jammer, then calling off the jam to seal the Bombshells victory.

Bout Highlights

First Half 20:00 – The bout started with an excellent display of defense from both teams, with both jammers caught in the pack for a full minute before either one earned lead. The Bombshells’ Diamond Rough and the Dolls’ Shiver Me Kimbers both execute textbook hit-out, draw-back moves, Crowella De Vil expertly “bridges” the pack preventing a no-pack call, then the Dolls’ Polly Punchkin and the Bombshells’ Hurtrude Stein and Smoka Hontas both dig in hard with plow stops to stop the jammers in their tracks. Fannie manages to break the stalemate and earn lead jammer, but not until there are only 43 seconds left in the jam.

First Half 17:00 – MEDUSA and Winona Collider team up to blast Freeze Baby to the outside, draw her back, then later do it again to force a track cut, which neutralizes a penalty earned by Shotgun Millie and send both jammers out on scoring runs.

First Half 12:00 – Fannie Tanner takes advantage of a power jam opportunity and gets her first big jam of the night, 17 points. On her second scoring pass, she absorbs a huge collision from BiPolar Bear, managing to stay in bounds and scoring points.

First Half 4:00 – The Bombshells’ Messi Jigler was Shotgun Millie’s worst nightmare in this jam, pushing Millie first to the infield, then to the outfield, drawing her back further each time. She also managed to knock MEDUSA out of the way so that her jammer Mugsy Marauder could earn another scoring pass.

First Half 2:00 – Kung Pow Bitchin and Polly Punchkin form a “Boat and Anchor” formation for Dagger Dolls, with one blocker in front to put on the breaks while the other sits in front of the jammer. That buys enough time for Killsey McMurder to earn lead jammer and muscle, move, and toe-stop-dance her way to 10 points for the Dolls. Oh, and did I mention that Killsey is going through cancer treatment? Bad. Ass.

Second Half 15:00 – Fannie Tanner opts to keep the jam going rather than call it off after the Dolls’ Shotgun Millie clears the pack. Millie struggles against the Bombshells Hurtrude Stein and Bully Jean on her first scoring pass, but then gets an expertly-timed assist from BiPolar Bear to clear her way for points.

Second Half 4:40 – Dagger Doll blocker Kayzilla sees Fannie Tanner coming around turn 3 on a scoring pass then cuts through the inside line to deliver a hard, legal thump to the Bombshells jammer. Both of them go flying into the front row and the crowd roars.
